In stopping to admire the opalescent layers on a pond's surface, the sensual brightness of sunlit trees, or the visceral richness of a wet city street at night, a brief moment of calm and serenity is found in a world upon which we can only rely for upheaval and change.
In recent months, I've also been fascinated by the moments where nature meets the man-made: the ocean waves crashing against concrete walls, or sumptuous rain reflecting bright city lights.
Monet had Giverny, Sargent had Venice. I have Beacon St or the Emerald Necklace. As a landscape artist desperate to find beauty in an ugly world, I currently only have my own backyard to turn to. Through the delicacy of watercolor or oil glazes, I focus on familiar subjects of local nature or moments of serenity on the city streets. I encourage viewers to pause and take it in: to recognize the meditation surrounding us, and the peace we already have.
